Privacy complaint first: why the organisation gets the first 30 days

The OAIC generally expects you to complain to the organisation or agency first and allow time for a response.

The first step is direct

Before lodging a privacy complaint with the OAIC, complain to the organisation or Australian Government agency involved. The OAIC says you can usually approach it if there is no response within 30 days or you are not satisfied with the response. Another external dispute resolution scheme may sometimes be the right path.

Build a clean record

State what happened, when it happened, the impact, supporting evidence and the outcome requested. Keep the complaint and proof it was sent.
