Repair, replacement or refund: matching the remedy to a consumer problem

Australian Consumer Law remedies depend on whether the problem is with goods or services and how serious the failure is.

Start with the guarantee, not the warranty

Consumer guarantees apply automatically to many goods and services. The available remedy can include repair, replacement, refund, cancellation or compensation, depending on what was supplied and whether the failure is major or minor. A store policy or expired voluntary warranty does not by itself decide the statutory guarantee.

Make the request usable

Identify the purchase, describe the failure, attach proof of purchase and state the remedy you seek. Keep the request factual and preserve a copy.
